A much-capped rugby international player has been appointed to lead a team that will be bidding to increase FCC’s share of the UK’s commercial and industrial waste collections market.
Former Scotland and British Lions player Paul Burnell has joined FCC subsidiary, Waste Recycling Group (WRG), as Commercial and Industrial Director.
He joins WRG from Biffa where he was the Commercial Director of the company’s C & I business, with responsibility for all aspects of sales, account management and customer service. Previous roles include Commercial Director at ATS Euromaster and various roles within the structured finance sector.
Paul is currently recruiting a team of skilled business development, operations and logistics professionals who later this year will begin talking to existing and potential commercial and industrial business customers about their waste collection needs.
Historically, WRG has not been heavily involved in waste collection, but last autumn Chief Executive of FCC’s UK operations, Paul Taylor, signalled a move into securing waste streams through the development and expansion of a commercial and industrial collection service. Expertise held within Focsa Services – which is also part of FCC’s UK operations – will be used as a basis for growing collection activities.
“We already have an unrivalled reputation for handling commercial and industrial waste on a third party basis,” said Edinburgh-born Paul. “We’re going to be focusing on those areas where we already have waste treatment and processing infrastructure in place.”
Paul, who will be talking with a number of potential commercial and industrial customers during this week’s RWM with CIWM Exhibition (13-15 September), at the NEC, Birmingham, added: “Going forward, we want to demonstrate how we can add real value and efficiencies by undertaking their collections direct, and help them deliver the best and most sustainable waste management solutions.”
WRG and Focsa Services are part of FCC, the international environmental services, infrastructure and energy group. FCC will be at Stand 2670 at the RWM with CIWM event.
Paul was capped 52 times playing for Scotland and the Lions playing alongside sporting legends such as Rob Andrew, Gavin Hastings and Will Carling.
He retired ten years ago after an illustrious career that saw him play for a number of leading clubs at home and abroad, including London Scottish.
