FCC Environment helps Wrexham Council achieve Government recycling target

Introduction

Working in partnership with FCC Environment, Wrexham County Borough Council (WCBC) is exceeding local and European recycling targets, handling approximately 80,000 tonnes of municipal waste per annum.

Background

The largest town in the north of Wales, Wrexham is a major centre for the region's commercial, retail and educational infrastructure. Wrexham county borough covers 50,500 hectares and has a population of over 130,000.

WCBC and FCC Environment, previously Waste Recycling Group (WRG), signed a private finance initiative (PFI) agreement in 2007 to build and run a new recycling facility in Wrexham.  Simultaneously, the household waste recycling centres at Brymbo and Plas Madoc underwent major refurbishment, enabling residents to recycle more of their waste. The existing household waste recycling centre at Bryn Lane was also brought under operational control of FCC Environment.

Wrexham Council was allocated £40 million by the Welsh Government over a 25 year period to develop the recycling park which is the first of its type to be funded under PFI in Wales.

The development of Wrexham Recycling Park has enabled Wrexham to reach, maintain and exceed recycling targets set by the Welsh Government and European legislation.

Working with Wrexham Council

To help WCBC meet and exceed targets set by local and European legislation and to minimise the amount of municipal waste sent to landfill, FCC Environment worked in partnership with the Council to design and construct Wrexham Recycling Park.

Wrexham Recycling Park is operated by FCC Environment on behalf of Wrexham Council and currently processes circa 29,000 tonnes of recyclable materials per year, with the household waste recycling centres handling circa 16,000 tonnes of recyclable materials per year.
