Odour Management Systems

1. Static Deodorising system

Milton Landfill site has installed a static deodorising system as part of its progressive odour management controls. This system is situated west of the site towards the Park & Ride facility opposite the operational area. The system uses a number of heads that spray a fine mist with an organic chemical which has the ability to trap odours as they fall to the ground rather than mask them with an additional perfume.

2. Daily Cover

As the site accepts waste the operational area moves which could lead to large areas of uncovered waste. FCC Environment has management procedures trained out to their staff to ensure that areas of the operational area that is not accepting waste if fully covered at all times using inert materials such as soils or clay. At the end of the daily operations cover is applied to the whole area.

The use of inert cover has the following positive effects:

1. Reduce the potential of odour from fresh waste deposits.

2. Reduce the potential of flies during the summer months.

3. Reduce the potential impact of scavenging pests.

4. Reduce the potential impact of wind blown litter.

3. Gas Control

The site Infinis andoperational staffmonitors the gas infrastructure on site on a regular basis toensure all is working at an optimal level. We also carry out regular inspections of all the wells to ensure they remain sealed and in a good state of repair.

During the operational fill stage we also install a network of horizontal pipework throughout the active areas which is
connected to the gas extraction system. Although these do not contain good quality landfill gas, they are used to apply a small amount of suction to the area helping with environmental and odour controls. These systems are sacrificial and will be replaced with appropriate gas wells once the areas are completed.

4. Capping

During the summer of 2014 we capped the top of Cell 19B.  Cell 19A is currently being capped and will be completed by March 2015.The site is progressively capped as each phase is completed. We are also currently building a new cell 21A which will be completed in march 2015.

Keeping local residents informed

FCC Environment along with the Milton Parish Council is planning to commence an inaugural Community Liaison Group for Milton Landfill. It will help to keep local residents up to date with what FCC are doing at the site and allows local residents to be regularly briefed on the site operations and answer any issues raised.

A Milton Landfill Webpage and an “out of hours” free phone system is to be launched in order to allow the Milton residents to view all current and proposed plans for the site. The “out of hours” free phone will allow residents to leave an out of hour’s message if they have any queries or complaints. These will be responded to at the start of the next working day.
