Glass Recycling - A Smashing Success
Glass recycling – a smashing success
FCC Environment is committed to shifting the focus from waste as a burden towards being a valuable resource, in line with the European Waste Framework Directive, and to help customers to significantly reduce waste to landfill.
Glass can be recycled endlessly without losing any of its properties – this saves valuable natural resources and also saves energy and reduces emissions of carbon dioxide.
Working in partnership with local authorities and businesses across the country, FCC Environment continues to help its customers, large and small, to recycle waste glass, cutting costs and improving environmental performance.
FCC Environment collects around 80,000 tonnes of glass for recycling each year.
FCC Environment’s glass recycling service is simple and efficient, helping customers to achieve virtually 100% diversion from landfill.
Glass collections are scheduled on a weekly or fortnightly service and can also be arranged on an ad-hoc basis in line with customer requirements.
Organisations that require only small quantities of glass to be recycled, can make use of FCC Environment’s Dry Mixed Recycling (DMR) service. Business customers such as hotels, pubs and clubs who produce large volumes of glass waste will benefit from a separate collection and recycling service.
FCC Environment provides containers to make recycling glass waste easy – a fleet of purpose designed collection vehicles does the rest. It all adds up to a simple, cost effective and hassle-free service that saves time as well as money.
All of the following glass container types can be put into one container:
Using specialist recycling and re-processors companies, FCC Environment ensures all waste glass is reused or recycled into new, single colour glass packaging – none is recycled as aggregate.

Working with Test Valley and Rushmoor Borough Councils
As part of two separate contracts with Test Valley Borough Council and Rushmoor Borough Council, FCC Environment will collect more than 11,000 tonnes of glass per year, saving the council £64 per tonne in landfill tax and helping to conserve natural resources.
FCC Environment, which has been recycling glass as part of an interim collection service since December 2011, is now collecting the glass from ‘bring’ banks in the Test Valley and Rushmoor areas of Hampshire, as part of a weekly scheme covering the two boroughs.
This new service follows FCC Environment’s success in East Anglia and the eastern region, where the company collected over 33,000 tonnes of glass from 1,840 sites in 2011, saving customers more than £2.4m in landfill tax.
