Leading recycling and waste management company FCC Environment recently collected three awards at parent company FCC’s Occupational Health and Safety Awards in Spain. Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas is an international environmental services, infrastructure and energy group employing over 95,000 people worldwide.
Wrexham Recycling Park, operated by FCC Environment on behalf of Wrexham Borough Council, received the Safety Management Award for being the top performing site in the Group in terms of health and safety. This is the result of the management team engaging with staff to foster a positive safety culture by carrying out training, risk assessments and reporting potential incidents to prevent accidents. Now all staff are aware of the hazards associated with their jobs and use the correct safety measures. In fact, there have zero accidents since 2010.
FCC Environment’s Roy Tunks and Andrew Sargent received the Technical Innovation Award for their lock-off box system which isolates mobile plant when mechanical works are in progress, drastically reducing the risk of accidents. Sadly, Roy Tunks passed away and so receives the recognition for his work posthumously.
Paul Stokes, Head of Safety, Health, Environment and Quality at FCC Environment, received an honourable mention for his hard work and commitment to health and safety. He tirelessly promoted the ‘Don’t Gamble with your Health and Safety’ campaign, part of the company’s three year improvement plan, and continues to drive and engage staff at all levels towards a positive safety culture.
Speaking of the accolades, Paul Stokes said: “These awards recognise FCC Environment’s commitment to ensuring the health and wellbeing of our staff as well as making safety as a ‘before thought’ not an afterthought. We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved so far as part of our improvement plan and will continue to work hard towards zero harm.”
These awards further cement FCC Environment’s reputation for health and safety after winning the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management’s Health and Safety Best Practice Award in 2013. The win recognised its ‘Don’t Gamble with your Health and Safety’ campaign for placing a strong emphasis on behaviour change through leadership and worker involvement, supported by training courses and safety coaches.
FCC will use the Occupational Health and Safety Awards as an opportunity to share best practice across the group to benefit the whole workforce.
